SOUL BIRD Laughter Joy on the street Summer Shimmering heat On its way Innocently passing by What a day Blue the colour of the sky Soul bird Ghost wings Caught in the light Frozen Motionless flight On its way Innocently passing by What a day Blue the colour of the sky In the sun Feathers waiting on the wind Now it’s done There’s no turning back again Soul bird Laughter Joy on the street Summer Shimmering heat On its way Innocently passing by What a day Blue the colour of the sky In the sun Feathers waiting on the wind Now it’s done There’s no turning back again Soul bird Innocently passing by Blue the colour of the sky Soul bird Feathers waiting on the wind There’s no turning back again Soul bird Soul bird Soul bird Soul bird

WHERE THE DARK RIVER MEETS THE SEA Standing in the light At the gate of a lone house Staring at a field Where some horses are grazing Insects are humming Soft on the breeze Down where the dark river meets … Echoes far behind Of the stone-coloured sadness Blowing through the flowers In a cloud-sheltered valley Dimly recalling Blood on the street Down where the dark river meets the sea Searching for a lake Hidden deep in the mountains Springing stone to stone On the steep rocky hillside Sun rising slowly Over the trees Down where the dark river meets the sea Sun rising slowly Over the trees Down where the dark river meets the sea Sun rising slowly Over the trees Down where the dark river meets the sea

DREAM WINTER’S DAY Lazing in the afternoon A sun that looks more like a moon Beyond the iced-up windowpane Painted white the naked trees Imagining the summer breeze Wishing it was only rain One dream winter’s day Side by side our footprints on the ground One dream winter’s day Won't be long until they can't be found Icicles along a ledge The stationmaster blue and red Whistle at his fingertips People moving here and there Their voices mingling in the air Breath emerging from their lips One dream winter’s day Side by side our footprints on the ground One dream winter’s day Won't be long until they can't be found As time melts away Falling through our fingers like the snow As time melts away Drifting further than we'll ever know One dream winter’s day High above us looking down A symphony without the sound Frozen city far below Rising slowly through the sky An aeroplane about to fly Captured in the hazy glow One dream winter’s day Side by side our footprints on the ground One dream winter’s day Won't be long until they can't be found As time melts away Falling through our fingers like the snow As time melts away Drifting further than we'll ever know One dream winter’s day One dream winter’s day Side by side our footprints on the ground Won't be long until they can't be found One dream winter’s day Falling through our fingers like the snow Drifting further than we'll ever know One dream winter’s day

UNDERNEATH A HAZEL TREE Walking up the lonely hillside Where the birds and the silver stream Weave a spell of ancient wonder While the leaves glisten in a dream Still I see my father standing Underneath a hazel tree Will I ever understand it What he's whispering to me Near the house a long-lost garden Waves of earth under tangled briars In the hearth a bright red flower With the flames of forgotten fires Still I see my father standing Underneath a hazel tree Will I ever understand it What he's whispering to me Still I see my father standing Underneath a hazel tree Will I ever understand it What he's whispering to me Underneath a hazel tree

This Once 03:13
THIS ONCE In a trance A spell that you can break Left to chance She may not ever wake This once Why can't you stay On such a day You're the sun in the sky In her wild ocean eyes In the past You should have seen her smile Time moves fast Just wait with her a while This once Why can't you stay On such a day You're the sun in the sky In her wild ocean eyes This once This once This once Why can't you stay On such a day You're the sun in the sky In her wild ocean eyes You're the sun in the sky In her wild ocean eyes This once This once This once This once

ONE COLOUR ENDS AND ANOTHER BEGINS Late on the outskirts of town Lights on the train slowing down In her fingers the letter he wrote her Hanging down by her side in the breeze Watching the world as it silently spins As it silently spins Scenes drifting by through the glass Thoughts turning back from the past As he wonders if his words have reached her With the station just seconds away Watching the world as it silently spins Carried away like a leaf on the wind Like a leaf on the wind Like a leaf on the wind One colour ends and another begins Carried away like a leaf on the wind One colour ends and another begins One colour ends and another begins One colour ends and another begins

FOREVER IS MINE One summer morning I awake And through the rustling of the leaves outside I hear the sound the songbird makes And then its wings as it takes off and flies Rising on its way somewhere In its heart no thoughts or cares Unaware of passing time At this moment The sun lights up the mountainside While just above the branches of the tree The cotton cloud shapes in the sky Go sailing by upon the deep blue sea Rising on their way somewhere In their hearts no thoughts or cares Unaware of passing time At this moment Forever is mine Forever is mine I see you waiting on the shore Listening to the late night waves It feels like we've been here before Standing in this very place Rising on our way somewhere In our hearts no thoughts or cares Unaware of passing time At this moment Rising on our way somewhere In our hearts no thoughts or cares Unaware of passing time At this moment Forever is mine Forever is mine

THIS MUST BE THE ONE All across the island there’s a fever A nation tired of staring at four walls Most of us are lost without a leader And few of us will ever hear the call This must be the one Following the river where it’s flowing The rising mist above the water wide In our faces now a warm wind blowing The scent of freedom from the other side This must be the one This must be the one This must be the one This is how the well feels when the stone drops The splash and then the ripples in the dark There are certain moments when the world stops And suddenly we see just where we are This must be the one This must be the one This must be the one This must be the one This must be the one

LOVE TAKES ITS TIME Cherry blossom on the evening breeze Children playing in a willow tree Love takes its time Love takes its time On a hilltop gazing at the town Far away from all the lights and sound Love takes its time Love takes its time Love takes its time Love takes its time Love takes its time

Avalanche 03:48
AVALANCHE So what are we gonna do now When all around’s an avalanche When all around’s an avalanche So what are we going through now Each one a grain of falling sand Each one a grain of falling sand Watching it happen Letting the world know When it comes crashing Not gonna let it show So how are we gonna live now Imagining another land Imagining another land So how are we gonna give now When all we have are broken hands When all we have are broken hands Watching it happen Letting the world know When it comes crashing Not gonna let it show No doubt there must be a way out From underneath the avalanche From underneath the avalanche No doubt the bird’s on its way now And in its beak the olive branch And in its beak the olive branch Watching it happen Letting the world know When it comes crashing Not gonna let it show Watching it happen Letting the world know When it comes crashing Not gonna let it show

SOUL BIRD - AN INTRODUCTION

Every journey needs a first footstep and mine is to be heard on a Belfast street on a summer's day back in the seventies. As a kid too young to join my older brothers and their friends as they entered a particular house renowned for its unique Beatles collection, I lingered in the garden watching the heavy curtains being drawn across the wide windows, wondering silently as a mysterious ritual was prepared for inside. During the following moments something emerged through the glass which transformed the languorous air into an all-embracing ecstasy of sound, imagery and melody, a slow-unfurling magic that entranced my young soul.
I still don't know how many songs it was I heard or how long the experience lasted but when the secret brotherhood tumbled noisily back out through the front door I found myself awakening from the trance on the same spot in the very same garden albeit a very different person. Life itself had changed. The leaden drapes and dusty windows had failed in their attempt to keep that lonesome figure from receiving the message – the transcendent power of music.

That moment in the garden has remained the driving force behind my development as a musician and songwriter ever since, a road that has taken me from my hometown Belfast to London to Berlin.
Over the 15 years I've been in Berlin I have recorded 3 albums the last of which, entitled 'Soul Bird', was recently completed. It's a feathered friend I've clung to long enough and it's now time to let it go, to let it glide out beyond those leaden curtains and dusty windows in search of passersby chancing to pause on their way through the garden of life...

The years spent capturing 'Soul Bird' were a pleasure and I hope the listener will be rewarded with the same wonder we felt while recording it. Sit back and enjoy the flight!
